Black pod disease is the result of this plant pathogen, which leads to various symptoms that form throughout the cocoa tree’s different stages of development. ''P. megakarya'' has the ability to infect every stage of growth as well as every part of the cacao plant under optimal, environmental conditions. Beginning with the infection of the seedlings, symptoms that may arise at this stage of infection are blight and root rot. When the site of infection is in regards to the stem or the branches, this can cause the formation of cankers.〔 When it is the pod that is the location of infection, this can lead to pod rot or black pod, providing insight on the origin of the disease name.〔 Other symptoms that may occur are damping off, dieback, lesions, mummification, premature drop, soft rot, and shriveling. Although the infection of ripe pods may not have such a drastic affect on production, other than a decrease in the quality of the cocoa beans, infected premature pods are deemed to be futile and are then disposed of.〔 The process of infection by ''P. megakarya'' is known to be quite rapid.
